This beautiful grouse (male) is all black, with a white wing bar, red head patch, and a lyre-shaped tail. The female has grey-brown plumage and a slightly forked tail.
In the spring and autumn, the black grouse gather in large groups at communal display grounds, or "leks".
Habitat
woodland borders and lightly forested areas in the hills, away from the coast.
