The Bouquetin des Alpes (Capra ibex, or Ibex in English) lives in the French-Italian Alps. Once near extinction, the bouquetin has made a strong come-back, and can be seen by non-talking hikers in the Mercantour National Park.
A variation, the Bouquetin des Pyrénées (Capra pyrenaica) from Spain, is still in danger of extinction.
Habitat
French and Italian Alps, between 2000 and 3500 m. Alpine meadows and open woods, rock slides and rocky cliffs. The bouquetin is an outstanding climber, even better than the chamois on steep, rocky cliffs.
