This is a short, sturdy iris that thrives on wind-swept heights. The color can be deep purple or yellow, or bicolored, and the two different colors often grow together.
The ones we've seen in Beyond have been under 15 cm.
The purple ones in top photo and first two big photos were on top of a very exposed rocky ridge west of St Vallier, and were only 8-10 cm tall.
Flowers.
Mar-Apr.
Size.
10-40 cm (short-med)
Flower Blossom.
Dark purple or clear yellow; sometimes bicolored. The blossoms in our photos were about 6 cm long.
Leaves.
The leaves are flat and spear-shaped, but shorter than the flower stem; only about 30 cm long for the tallest plants.
Habitat.
Pine woods and dry hillsides; open rocky areas.
