  Dactylorhiza sambucina   Family: Orchidaceae (Orchid)

This orchid comes in two colors: one has pale yellow flowers with brownish-orange speckles and the other is purple with an orangish center and brown-orange speckles. Both colors grow in the same area, with the two often side-by-side.

Flowers. Apr-Jul.

Size. 10-30 cm (short)

Flower Blossom. 15-20 mm long. The inflorescence consists of a compact raceme with 20-40 flowers.

Leaves. lanceolate

Habitat. Heathlands, open grassy areas. Likes calcareous soil. We find fields of them every Spring on the Plateau de Calern.
