Grows just above the tree line. A favorite home for the Black Grouse (Tétras Lyre). We saw many of these, mid-August, without flowers, but the shrubs easy to identify with the rhododendron leaves.

20-80 cm (short-tall)
Flower Blossom.
5 petals. The 5 petals are joined as a tube at the base.
Leaves.
Persistant, dark green and shiny above, rust colored beneath.
Habitat.
Mountain lawns, rocky and somewhat damp. Often with northern exposure and in the bottom of valleys; in the eastern part of the Mercantour.
