This completely non-spiny plant grows in clumps just about everywhere in Beyond, above 1000 m altitude, and across Southern France.

Flower Blossom.
The flowers and bracts are yellow, turning bright orange-red in early summer. The plant has hairless stems, often with small lateral umbels of flowers and non-flowering side-shoots.
Leaves.
The stem leaves are narrow and linear, growing thickly on non-flowering shoots, like young pine trees. The upper leaves (bracts) are yellow-green, rounded or kidney shaped, and cup the flower clusters.
Habitat.
Gassy and rocky ground, waste ground; likes calcareous soil. Rarely at sea level.
