The European Festival of Dolls is held in Mirepoix, in Southwestern France. The event is unusual and wonderful, it's in the South of France, and it fits with the spirit of Beyond.
The information here was provided by Marlaine Verhelst, the Dutch Master Artist who provided the photos, and made the dolls shown in them.
Where?
(by Marlaine Verhelst)
Mirepoix is on the D119, 48 km south-southwest of Carcassonne, in the Airège (09) department (roughly 250 km west of Avignon and Arles). This medieval city lies in the foothils of the Pyrenees, and has spectacular panoramic views of these mountains. This is a sunny region of rolling countryside, mountain streams, open pastures and woodland.
Staying in Mirepoix seems to be a return to the middle ages and a starting point when visiting the other beautiful and historic towns of Toulouse, Carcassonne, Foix, Montsegur (the last stronghold of the Cathari) and Montaillou (known from the medieval novel).
Mirepoix is also a starting point of many a mountain walk. The various routes take you to elevated spots with unique panoramic views. In the mountains you can visit interesting caverns with pre-historic cave drawings (among others the world famous 'Grotte de Niaux'). Or you can always keep on the move with sports such as mountain climbing, cycling and canoeing on the river Ariege.
The Festival
A four-day European Festival of Dolls (since 1989) is a gathering of lovers of dolls, doll-making and puppet theatre. Attending will be professional and amateur doll makers, collectors, the media and a large public of all ages.
