Maps showing the hiking trails and cross-country ski trails
are available in even the tiniest book and news shops.
Maps of 1:25'000 and 1:50'000 are provided by a number of companies, with
sets of maps often covering most of France.
- The blue 1:25'000 maps sold directly by the IGN (Institut Geographique National)
are extremely detailed, and the best for hiking. Hiking trails are shown along with topographical lines, altitudes, and other useful landmarks. The downside is, if you're hiking long-distance or in several different locations, you'll need a lot of thes maps, and they're fairly expensive.
- The 1:50'000 maps published by Didier Richard are best for showing the trails: hiking in blue and cross-country skiing in red. These seem to be harder to find these days (2006).
- The Michelin "green" roadmaps are also very useful for hiking. They show some of the GR trails, but mainly they give you a perspective on nearby villages that could be across a couple of valleys and off your hiking map.
IGN Maps
- IGN maps are now available for purchasing on the IGN website (www.ign.fr); click on the English flag then click "LEISURE" (LOISIRS). You can then search for the Commune (town or village) or for a specific map number.
- The area coverage of the Top Serie Bleue maps (1:25,000) is shown on IGN web page [Top Blue].
- The Serie Orange France maps are scale 1:50,000. You'll have to look up a specific commune on the IGN site to see what Serie Orange map is available. For example, Menton specifies Top-100 map #61.
- The Top 100 maps are scale 1:100,000. The area covered by each Topo 100 map is shown on IGN web page [Top 100].
