Riez [map]
Riez is at the Plateau de Valensole, in the heart of Provence and the land of lavender. From here you can easily visit Moustiers-Sainte-Marie for the pottery, take a trip along the Grand Canyon du Verdon, do water sports at the Lac de Sainte-Croix and visit the many Provencal villages in the area [map].
It's an easy day-trip to the markets in Manosque or Forcalquier, and only a bit further up to see the Citadel in Sisteron [map C3]. Riez to Digne-les-Bains is only 42 km (under an hour) along some very pretty roads past La Bégude-Blanche and Mézel along the Asse river. The first weekend in August is the Courso de la Lavande in Digne.
