Gasoline costs
... in France are among the highest in Europe; considerably more than in the United States, but not too shocking for a European. The price examples given here are approximate, and apply to normal gas stations. Large "Supermarkets" sell gasoline at prices about 10 to 20% less than the normal gas-station prices. Paying with credit card is standard; VISA cards and Master cards are accepted everywhere; American Express is almost never accepted.
The smaller stations, however, are not making more money; in fact, they are having trouble surviving. They cannot get the discounted prices reserved for the larger discount chains and their costs are higher. You might consider helping support them, and getting the benefit of friendly service (much of the time).
