 Cadière-d'Azur photo cadiere092.jpg (11 k)

Cadière-d'Azur is a small medieval village perched on a hilltop about 6 km north of Bandol on the coast. The old village, with a fairly large bunch of houses, sits on a rocky ridge, quite picturesque when approached along the small road from the south.

The autoroute circles around the east and north side of the village, sort of spoiling the medieval feeling when standing on the far side to look out across the plains to the north, although there is a nice view of Le Castellet perched on its hilltop just across the valley.

Inside the village and along the main street, however, you're isolated from the modern world, with typical little shops as well as artisanal shops for pottery and local products.

Above the small main street, you can walk through the archway past the studded oaken doors of the porte St-Jehan, dated "Janvier 1561" [photo-3], and wander up the narrow little streets of the old village. This is one of three remaining medieval portes, including the porte de la Colle and the porte Mazrin, in the ancient medieval walls. Among the ancient buildings of the old town are the Tour de l'Horloge with a 16th-century campanile and the 16th century St-André church with its tall hexagonal clock tower [photo-4].
