La Martre is a small farming village about 12 km southeast of Castellane, in the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon. The village sits in a wide valley of fields surrounded by low forested hills.
This little village does have a grocerie store (alimentation), and a bar-tabac, listed as one a "Bistro de Pays". And that's it for commerce. Both La Martre and nearby Chateauvieux are simple, authentic villages without pretention, but with character.

The stone lavoir and fountain have a plaque with a bit of history. This states that the first mention of the fountain is 1842, but it's probably much older. The date 1909 marked on the fountain is the date of a restoration.
At the upper edge of the village is a picturesque old farm [photo]. An ancient wooden cross at the corner of the farm marks the place where, in 1930, human bones from prehistoric and medieval sites were buried.
Another rather cute old sign very near the ancient wooden cross indicated that "this road leads out to the place on another road (Logis-de-Pin) where Napoleon stopped for lunch".
